| June 28, 2002, LANCASTER, PA - Octothorpe scored one outright victory and chalked up a tie in this year's SongFight Live event, SongFight Plain and Tall. | ||
|
"Octothorpe was inscrutable... they reminded a bit of Devo fronted by a Beat poet." |
In a format that pitted ten bands against each other in mostly head-to-head duels with the audience calling for their favorite songs, Octothorpe stepped up in the first round and pulled out a tie with local band Brick Pig in the "Skyline" battle. Joining Octothorpe in this performance were Ben on guitar, Sparks on bass, and Dr. Worm on drums, who commented "Octothorpe was just incredible... indescribable, really".

In the second battle of the night, Dr. Worm continued to sit in on the drums as Octothorpe grabbed for the gold with their rendition of "Acid Mouth", beating out another hometown favorite and event organizer, Frankie Big Face.
| Frankie turned the tables by pulling out all the stops and unveiling a brand new version of "Been To China" which narrowly beat out Octothorpe's own version featuring Spud on the Casio DigiHorn and Dita joining Bro on vocals, which had been the winner of the original SongFight contest at songfight.com. | ||
The event was a live version of the ongoing SongFight competition, in which bands from around the world compete by writing and posting songs in response to a song title posted by reclusive host narbotic. The song titles featured were all originally presented at songfight.com. In addition to Octothorpe, the bands competing included Frankie Big Face, the John Benjamin Band, Gareth Sparks, Raised by Wolves, Hoblit, 15/16 Puzzle, Brick Pig, Dr. Worm, and the questionably named Prosthetic Johnson. |

As the night went on, voting was eventually suspended in the tradition set at SongFight Live in San Francisco last year, Spud unpacked the accordian, and Octothorpe delighted the crowd with a performance of their "Floating Bridge".

For their final number of the night, Octothorpe invited the audience to participate either with hand-held percussion from their seats or their own instruments on stage. The house was emptied as most of the musicians came up to join them in a SongFight megaband version of their "On My Block", which would have brought down the house if there had been anyone left not playing something!
